UK SURVIVAL COURSES: Scottish Mountain
Snow & Survival skills week

You
will meet up with your instructors in Scotland on Sunday when you will have
time to settle into your lodge accommodation, prepare your kit and unwind
from your journey.
Training
starts on Monday when you will learn how to walk in crampons, use ice axes
and some safety techniques such as how to arrest slides. We will return to
the lodge in the early evening for our meal and a well-earned rest.
Tuesday
will see you going higher and perhaps taking in a peak and a ridge or two so
you can use the skills you have learned before building a snow hole to sleep
in for the night.
On
Wednesday we will continue our journey and learn how to descend safely and
deal with avalanches and other dangers before returning to our accommodation
late in the afternoon where we will be able to dry out our kit and grab a
good night’s sleep.
Thursday,
weather permitting, we will find a nice gully where we can do some basic
snow and ice climbing. It may sound easy but it’s going to be the hardest
day of the week! We
will return to the lodge early in the evening for a hot meal and a night’s
rest before Friday’s expedition.
At
this stage you should have acquired some essential skills, which should see
you competent in the hills in severe weather. So for the next 36 hours you
will have to plan and execute an expedition to reach an objective high in
the mountains between yourselves where you will put into practice all that
you have learned. You will never be alone as your instructors will be close
at hand for safety and observation, but you will make all the decisions. You
will have to build another snow shelter and sleep out for a second night
before continuing your expedition on Saturday, hopefully reaching your
transport back to the lodge about lunchtime. Saturday night will be a time
to unwind at the pub with a few stories before journeying back on Sunday
morning.
